Steve Morrell was raised outside of New York City. After receiving a bachelor's in graphic design from Long Island University, he moved into a career in advertising before returning to his original love of painting.
Although Steve had been painting his whole life, he never felt comfortable with the term "artist." He felt more like a draftsman doing commissions for others. It was only after moving to Colorado that he began painting in a fine art space with a voice uniquely his own expressed in a body of figurative work.
Characterized by exaggerated brushstrokes and gestural mark-making, Steve's nude portraitures invoke intense emotion, energy, and mood. The extraction of manmade indicators such as artifacts of daily living and clothing, remove time, space and gravity from the equation, creating a timeless and sententious energy. Themes of acceptance and divine feminine expressed through the infinite shape, shadow and color of the human form, create an overall picture of vibrance.
Recess invites viewers to liberate their inner child and rekindle the spirit of joy. Play is the name of the game! From nude figures suspended in mid-air to water guns and birthday skates, Steve delivers an overarching theme of play in his most recent work characterized by movement and exuberant color. Influenced by post-impressionism, Steve's unique artist expression is rich with visceral emotions and etheric energy, transforming the darkness of his inner world into one of light and joy. It is in the joy of creation that he finds recess. And he hopes you will too!
